THE GRAVEL PIT AS A LIVING SPACE
exceptional species richness in secondary habitats.
Gravel pits provide a diverse habitat for water birds, mammals,
amphibians, snakes, and invertebrates. Species diversity is
particularly high in the first few years after renaturation.
After gravel extraction, the area is recultivated, renatured,
and used for other purposes.
This also provides an opportunity to return the areas to nature
and allow natural succession to take place.
Without land management, however, the diverse habitats and,
with them, the high species richness will disappear.
The presentation provides an overview of the development
of this secondary habitat over many years and uses
impressive images and video recordings to show
the great species richness in these habitats.
