Isola della Cona and associated sites. - Nature reserves in the lagoons of the Northern Adriatic.

The Marano and Grado lagoons in the northern Adriatic Sea are of great
importance for numerous nesting and migratory birds.
However, nature reserves that provide year-round protection for birds
and enable tens of thousands of birds to overwinter are particularly important.
This presentation is an ornithological travelogue about nature reserves
on the northern coast of the Adriatic Sea, which are IBA (Important Bird Area),
Ramsar, and Natura 2000 areas.
Special attention is given to the Isola della Cona nature reserve,
where, thanks to targeted management measures,
nature and birds can be observed and photographed up close.

THE GRAVEL PIT AS A LIVING SPACE

exceptional species richness in secondary habitats.

Gravel pits provide a diverse habitat for water birds, mammals, amphibians, snakes, and invertebrates. Species diversity is particularly high in the first few years after renaturation. After gravel extraction, the area is recultivated, renatured, and used for other purposes. This also provides an opportunity to return the areas to nature and allow natural succession to take place. Without land management, however, the diverse habitats and, with them, the high species richness will disappear. The presentation provides an overview of the development of this secondary habitat over many years and uses impressive images and video recordings to show the great species richness in these habitats.
