ERDEI Károly, Linz:
A unique habitat – the gravel pit
A short summary of my talk, which
appeared in the TIT Talks 2016 publication
Gravel pits provide a diverse habitat for birds, reptiles,
amphibians, and invertebrates. Species diversity is particularly
high in the first few years following renaturation.
The presentation provides an overview of the development of this
secondary habitat, with many beautiful photographs demonstrating
what an excellent observation area gravel pits are for nature lovers.
However, the threats to gravel pits are manifold, including filling
and rapid reconstruction. However, it is possible to give nature back
its territory and allow natural succession to take place.
Without subsequent management, however, the colorful habitat
and species richness will disappear.
